Description
The Gymnasium in Mostar was founded in 1893 and began to operate at the Port. The gymnasium operated there until 1898, when one wing of today's building was built, according to the design of the Czech architect František Blažek. In 1902, a second wing was added, giving the building its current appearance. The pseudo-Moorish style building was distinguished by numerous decorations inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Spain.
The building of the Mostar Gymnasium also houses the "United World College Mostar", one of 18 such educational institutions in the world (United World Colleges), which occupies a third of the gymnasium building. In 2006, it was inaugurated by Noor, Queen of Jordan.
