The project was financed under the Interreg VI-A IPA Croatia \u2013 Bosnia and Herzegovina \u2013 Montenegro 2021-2027 Program. The total budget of the project amounts to EUR 1,675,432.20, and Interreg funding (IPA III CBC) amounts to EUR 1,424,117.37 (85%). It is a cross-border initiative aimed at promoting sustainable waste management and circular economy solutions in urban areas under the protection of UNESCO in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.<\/p>\n<p>The project areas include \u0160ibenik (Croatia), Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Kotor (Montenegro), and with EIHP as the leading partner, the other project partners are the EKO ZH Association (Bosnia and Herzegovina), the City of \u0160ibenik (Croatia), the Tourist Board of the City of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina), the Municipality of Kotor (Montenegro) and the Ru\u0111er Bo\u0161kovi\u0107 Institute (Croatia).<\/p>\n<p>The project is specifically aimed at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>demonstrating the effectiveness, sustainability and transferability of circular economy solutions adapted to the protection of cultural heritage in urban areas under UNESCO protection;<\/li>\n<li>reducing waste generation and improving waste separation, reuse and recycling through innovative pilot activities;<\/li>\n<li>strengthening the capacity of local authorities and public service providers to apply the principles and practices of the circular economy;<\/li>\n<li>involving citizens, the business sector and tourists in sustainable consumption and waste prevention;<\/li>\n<li>preservation of cultural and natural heritage while encouraging sustainable urban development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the implementation of the project, the partners will jointly develop and test innovative solutions, including smart waste separation systems, municipal waste collection systems with minimal impact on the environment, a mobile point for reuse and repair, a Green Label certificate for local business entities and participatory Eco Labs, designed to encourage the involvement of stakeholders in the transition to a circular economy.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key outputs of the project will be the development of a Zero Waste Roadmap and a Digital Decision Matrix Tool, which will provide local governments and waste management companies with practical guidance for planning and implementing circular economy measures in urban areas sensitive to valuable cultural heritage. The tools will be validated through pilot activities and designed to be applicable to other local governments in the wider programme area facing similar environmental challenges and pressures related to tourism.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to demonstration activities, the project will include training programs for representatives of local authorities and public service providers, educational workshops for schools, awareness-raising campaigns aimed at local communities, and special initiatives that will encourage tourists to become active partners in the protection of UNESCO-protected sites. Stakeholders will get access to methodologies, tools and examples of good practice developed within the project, which will help them in the practical application of circular economy principles in their areas.<\/p>\n<p>By connecting scientific expertise, local knowledge, stakeholder participation and cross-border cooperation, FICHO will contribute to cleaner urban environments, more efficient use of resources, strengthening of institutional capacities and better protection of cultural heritage under the protection of UNESCO.
